Eagle Grove Schools Are Proactive and Safe with Radon
Recently, Eagle Grove Community School District completed the process of testing its Elementary and
Robert Blue Middle School building(s) for radon. We recently received good news: Our test results
came back below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) advised radon action level of 4.0
pCi/L. This means we now have peace of mind that our students, staff and community are learning in
spaces that are as safe as possible from radon.
What is radon and why does it matter? Radon gas cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, and moves upward
through cracks and other openings in the foundations of buildings from the soil under a building. In the
United States, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers.
The State of Iowa requires radon testing at least once every 5 years for all Iowa public school attendance
centers, licensed preschools and licensed child care centers.
To learn how to accurately do the initial radon testing ourselves, we saved taxpayer dollars by receiving
training from the School Radon Training & Support System facilitated by Energy Association of Iowa
Schools (EAIS). If we would have found elevated radon in our school, EAIS would have coached us
through the process of fixing it. EAIS also helped us proactively place our school building on a multi-
year rotating radon test schedule so we can continue to ensure radon safety in the future.
For most students and staff, research suggests that schools are actually the second largest contributor to
radon exposure. The home is likely to be the most significant source of radon exposure. Please test your
home for radon and if necessary, take action to reduce the risk of lung cancer by reducing elevated radon
concentrations.
If you have questions regarding radon testing for Eagle Grove Community Schools, please feel free to
contact Logan Willard, at (515)-293-2114. More information regarding residential radon testing can be
found at www.epa.gov/radon.

About Eagle Grove Community School District
The district is composed of four different buildings. The administration building contains the superintendent’s office, office manager, finance officer, technology department, and school board chambers. The administration building is currently undergoing a million-dollar renovation adding new classrooms and making way for our growing district.
The Eagle Grove Elementary is the district’s newest school building and recently underwent adding eight more classrooms. The elementary building houses transitional kindergarten through fourth grade.
Robert Blue Middle School was named after a local attorney and resident of Eagle Grove. Robert Blue was elected as the 30th Governor of Iowa in 1945 (NGA, n.d.). The middle school houses grade fifth through eighth grade.
About Eagle Grove
Eagle Grove Community Schools are located in Eagle Grove, Iowa, which is a town of 3700 people in north central Iowa. The student population comes from Eagle Grove and the surrounding communities. Between all three of the school buildings, the current enrollment for the current school year is around 1100 students.
Eagle Grove might be a smaller community, but it has lots to offer the members and visitors. Within Eagle Grove city limits, individuals can find lots of outdoor recreation at one of it’s seven city parks. On the hot summer days, enjoy dipping your toes in the refreshing water of the aquatic center and plummet down one of the three slides. Eagle Grove is the home of the Wright County Fair and has free admission. The city has many delicious restaurants, dance clubs, and a family-owned furniture store. If you like to walk trails or stay fit, Eagle Grove also has the Three River Trail, a multi-town linked trail system, and a city-owned fitness center, which will be added to starting in March of 2021 (Chamber of Commerce, 2020).
